School holiday activities

Not long now till the September School Holiday activities in the Great Ocean Road region start rolling around again…..

It’s always fun having school holiday activities rolling around again and we start to see children having fun on our little farm…..there is something very special about eating eggs you have collected yourself, and from officially Happy Hens!!  Our girls are doing a great job of popping out their eggs, even our youngest gal, who makes the cutest little tiny eggs you have ever seen!!    Then there’s the alpacas, Normie and Cookie, who are both very shy but can sometimes be enticed to eat from their buckets.  The sheep are a pushover…they’ll eat just about anything (not children though, they definitely stop at that).  Bread and apples are big favourites.

The dam is full of yabbies…and now that we’ve got an ‘R’ in the month again (the months without an ‘R’ are just that bit cold for them), they begin to come out again and September is the start of yabby season…..such fun to get a bit muddy and see if you can catch a yabby or two in the nets.  Of course, you don’t HAVE to eat them…but they do taste pretty yummy!!

For the energetic little ones, theres the long bushwalks right outside your cottage door,  You can even walk right out into the Otway Forest Park from here….great tactics for mum and dad to make sure everyone sleeps well at night!!

And what about a little bonfire out front of your cottage – it’s like camping, but with gorgeous comfy beds and hot showers right alongside….hard to beat a crispy burnt marshmallow on a stick, I say.School holiday activities in the paddock

A bit further afield…

There’s lots more stuff to do around about the Great Ocean Road region too….there are waterfalls to explore, the Otway Fly (and maybe even a zip line adventure to boot).

Ravens Creek Farm, just 20 minutes from us is running a new School holiday program on September 23rd and 30th, aiming to teach children about where our food comes from in a fun and hands-on way! In one morning your child will learn the principles of organic farming, natural animal husbandry, healthy soils, healthy food and ethical farming practices.  Each workshop starts with a tour around the farm, allowing children to get up close and personal with all of our animals, as well as pick and taste our fresh organic produce.   The tour is followed by an outdoor cooking activity plus a craft and/or gardening activity tailored to a specific theme.  Choose from the Chicken and the Egg or the Pigness of the Pig ….sounds like fun to us!!

There are lots of short walks for short legs close by….how about a koala walk at Kennet River?

It might even be warm enough for a surf lesson…Go Ride A Wave – Surf lessons in Lorne.  Bookings essential, Ph. 1300 132 441, www.gorideawave.com.au

If horse riding is your kids thing, there are two great options nearby – Blazing Saddles Aireys Inlet- Ph. 5289 7322 or Spring Creek Horse Rides Ph: 5266 1541 Bellbrae.  Bookings required.

Or for the more adventurous, you could try Paintball, Segway and Globe riding at Planet Mud Adventures, the Outdoor Adventure Centre in Yeodene

Maybe you need to see some kangaroos up close?  Anglesea Golf Club is now offering 20 minute conducted tours of their resident kangaroos!  Tours run Monday – Friday  10.00am – 4.00pm.  Adults $10, Children $5, Family Pass 2 Adults & 2 Children Under 12 $25.00

If the weather turns bad, there are movies in Colac and Waurn Ponds, both about 30 minutes drive from us.
